Jew-ish: Reinvented Recipes From A Modern Mensch

Jake Cohen

Jake is a genius at inviting others to share his absolute delight in Jewish food and Shabbat dinner, and his challah recipe is simply perfect. In Jew-ish he describes how he and his then new husband Alex built community and new traditions through Shabbat dinners. The book itself is a collection of recipes that Jake put together while hosting Shabbat, full of unique meal ideas, hosting tips, and cooking advice all written in an accessible, humorous style. He even includes information on traditional Friday night rituals, as well as offers alternative readings and exercises for those who prefer to personalize a little bit more. I'm proud that OneTable was a part of Jake's journey.

Schmaltzy

Jewish Food Society

The brains behind the Schmaltzy podcast, the creative team at The Jewish Food Society, share my obsession with food, family, and great stories. Their episodes feature some big names, like Molly Yeh, Mike Solomonov, and Michael W. Twitty, and I feel like I am around the table with them. This is great listening while preparing for Shabbat, and many episodes mention it explicitly — I especially love the challah episode with Uri Scheft of Bread's Bakery.

Documentary

I was overjoyed when I was asked to provide an interview for this deep dive into the Sabbath. This two-hour documentary is told as a collection of short stories - weaving together the Sabbath's ancient roots and its contemporary practice. The film introduces different traditions and practices and offers study guides, inviting viewers to try out Sabbath experiences for themselves.
